Is Snack Crate worth it?

After months of being relentlessly bombarded with ads, I finally decided to give snack crate a try. I'm usually really good about not buying products off social media but I started to seriously consider it after a momma friend mentioned how much her children really looked forward to learning about a new country each month and of course trying out all the new snacks! So when I found a 50% off coupon for the first month I knew I had to go for it.

Snack Crate is a monthly subscription service international snack box. Each month's box is stocked with snacks from a different country. The box also includes interesting details about each snack and about the featured country. I loved the idea right away because what better way to combat pandemic cabin fever?

I told my little ones all about it and even let them watch a few unboxing videos on youtube so they were pretty excited about it and couldn't wait for us to receive our first box. The first box was from Germany and arrived very quickly.

Everything in the Germany box was really delicious and we all had a great time trying things. The disappointing thing about the Germany box and all the boxes in general is that each box tends to have a lot of similar things. So for Germany there were so many bags of different types of sour gummy candy. My children aren't allowed to eat gummy candy and I usually try to avoid it as well so we ended up with a lot of things left over that no one could eat.

The boxes that followed all had a similar trend of having some really great items to try out but also being repetitive.  For instance our second box from Sweden had a ton of chocolate and not as many savory snacks. It still ended up being my favorite box because of all the delicious chocolate!

The Ukraine box stood out for having some really great cookies and unexpected flavors.

One of the more unusual boxes was from Thailand.  Nearly everything in the box was an overpowering spicy shelled seafood flavor. Since we normally don't eat shelled seafood, we didn't really have much that we could try from that box.

The fun thing about the boxes was seeing name brands we recognized in totally new flavors.

Aside from their monthly subscription, snack crate also offers separate speciality boxes and I decided to give the Cadbury crate a try. This box is full of British and Canadian classics.

Overall, after several months of trying it out I still have very mixed feelings about snack crate. On one hand it's so fun to get a surprise delivery of random snacks, especially now during all the pandemic travel restrictions. On the other hand the boxes are all very hit or miss. It would be better if you could have more control over which countries you got to try and what items you didn't want. Unless you have someone else to share it with, it can be quite wasteful because there are always things left over that no one wants to try and some boxes have way too much of the same thing. In general, each box seemed to have way more sweet things than savory which makes it seem less of a snack crate and more of a candy crate. In the summer an icepack is included with the crate but many of the items still arrive melted beyond recognition which takes away from the experience a little. I also noticed that every single box had a variety of wafers; so we started to get a little tired of those.  I would say it's at least worth trying out for a few months when there is a promotion running. You are always free to cancel whenever or skip a month if you need a break.

Happy snacking!
